Deck Refinishing

Deck Refinishing

All wood surfaced decks require regular care and maintenance to stay protected and look great for the duration of its life. Unless you have a roof over your deck, they see all four seasons of our varying Canadian climate. Our temperatures can range from -20 to +45 degrees Celsius, our decks get covered in snow and ice, and the sun beats down on them. On top of the weather, our decks get regular wear and tear from daily use! On top of regular deck cleaning, your deck boards will need to be refinished. Depending on whether you have a transparent, semi-transparent, or solid stain on your deck will determine the intervals of refinishing. We always recommend an oil base semi-transparent stain such as Messmers UV Plus that penetrates into the wood, which gives great protection and still shows off the beauty of the wood. A great benefit to using a semi-transparent stain is when it comes time to refinish your deck, it will just need a good cleaning, and then you can re-coat without any sanding! Other great oil based products to look at would be Cutek Extreme or Sico Proluxe SRD. If looking for a water based semi-transparent or solid stain for your deck, we recommend using Benjamin Moore Arborcoat for your deck coatings. When using a solid stain to finish or re-finish your deck, there is more maintenance required. If your solid stain finish starts to crack, flake, or peel, you’ll have to strip or sand all the coating before re-coating to get back to that smooth, deficiency free surface.
